Cork leather, or cork fabric as its sometimes called, is an eco-friendly alternative to animal leather. It is derived from the bark of cork oak trees, using a technique that dates back centuries.

 

Cork oak trees around predominantly found around the coastal plains of Portugal, Spain, France and Morocco. The fabric itself is derived from peeling back the outer bark of the tree to reveal its inner cork. Removal of the bark actually proves beneficial to the oak trees, which are able to regenerate over time. Some studies even claim that the process actually extends the lifespan of the oak trees.

 

Sometimes called nature’s leather, the material extracted is strong and durable, making it ideal for designing of accessories and bags. The material itself is soft, light, sustainable, hypoallergenic and waterproof.
